KUBERA

KUBERA
THE LORD OF THE RICHES

Among the superhuman, celestial beings, there are various types - Yaksha, Gandharva, Deva, Asura, Naga, Rakshasa, etc.
There was a princess of the Yakshas and she gave birth to a child whose father was the great Rishi called Visravas.
The son of Visvaras was named Kubera and under the guidance of the father took up severe Tapas towards Lord Siva.
Lord Siva was so pleased with Kubera and caused Mayan the divine architecht to build a most magnifient city which was called Lankapuri. He also created a vimana called Pushpaka Vimana which could travel at immense speed over immeasurable distances and in all directions.
Sometime later, Visravas was forced by an Asura princess to give her very powerful children.
The children were named Dasagriva, KumbhaKarna, Vibheeshana, and Princess Surpanakha.
Dasagriva was so called because he had ten heads.
The Asura princess told them to do Tapas towards Lord Siva. They did the Tapas. Dasagriva, after a long Tapas, performed a sacrifice - yaagam.
He cut off his heads one by one and threw them into the sacrificial fire.
When he cut the 10th head, Lord Siva appeared and revived him.
Lord Siva gave him thirty million days of life and invincibility. He also gave him numerous divine weapons like Pasupathastra, Brahmastra, etc.
With all this power, Dasagriva went to Lankapuri and chased out his half-brother Kubera. He coveted the city and became crowned as Lankeswara. He also took hold of the Pushpaka Vimana.
Kubera went crying to Lord Siva.
Lord Siva took pity on him and ordered the divine architecht to build an even more fantastic celestial city called ALagaaPuri.
Kubera was crowned as ALagEsa - the Lord of ALagapuri. As a compensation for whatever Kubera lost, Lord Siva gave the Nava Nidhis to Kubera. The Nava Nidhis were immense riches of all kinds.
Thus Kubera became the God of Riches - Nava Nidhis.
And Lord Siva gave him a rare privilege by proclaiming him as his personal friend.
And he also made Kubera, one of the Ashta Dik Palas - the Guardian of the North.
All this was given by Lord Siva.
